Using WordPress for Class

Here comes the rain again! The afternoon has brought some light showers to the Fort Collins area, which has given me the perfect opportunity to work on a website here in wordpress for another one of my JTC classes. My partner and I are covering Hookah Culture here in Fort Collins!

Check it out and let me know how it looks, I will be submitting it for a grade on Friday! Wish me luck!

Social Media Info-Video

Earlier in my JTC490 class we watched a video about social media’s power as a marketing tool, by Erik Quallman. Since viewing the video in class, he has released and updated version with more surprising facts about the state of social media in our lives today.

Check it out! What fact surprises you the most?

Using the Videolicious App!

Using the Videolicious App!

For our final project in our JTC490 Mobile Media Technology class, we were asked to create a quick news story using the Videolicious App, which is a very cool little piece of technology that allows you to create a story by editing clips and creating your voice over at the same time.

Our group covered the student fee and tuition increases, and this is what I came up with!

When Technology takes over

When Technology takes over

Hello everyone!

On my way to school this morning I saw two different “almost accidents” involving a bike and a car, as well as two other cars. This video has recently gained tons of popularity on Facebook and many other social networking sites, and after seeing this morning’s close calls, this video came to mind. Texting and driving is a huge cause of many accidents we see today.

How influential is technology in your day to day life and relationships? Have you found that it is a mostly positive or negative influence?

New Wave Hiring Techniques

http://www.fastcompany.com/3026793/lessons-learned/how-to-nab-a-job-using-linkedins-whos-viewed-your-profile?utm_source=facebook

Happy Dead Week here at Colorado State University! Students are already cramming, the classrooms are only a quarter full, and the coffee is flowing faster than ever at Morgan’s Grind in the Morgan Library. As I begin preparing for my own final exams, I stumbled on this interesting article about using  Linked In’s “profile views”setting. It makes a lot of sense, and while I have yet to create my own Linked In account, this seems like it should almost be common sense when using the website to get a job.

Have you ever used this technique to land a job? What are some other social media tips you have found to be successful when looking for employment? Let me know in the comments, and have a wonderful morning!

Greetings!

Sooooo I have already posted some things on this blog, mostly for various JTC classes I have taken, and I’m excited to add some new content for another JTC class I just signed up for! It’s a seven week workshop all about social media use as a form of communication, and I think it will be a really good way for me the sharpen my skills as a “budding” communicator. I also realized that I should let you all in on a little bit about me!

-I was born and grew up in a suburb outside of Boulder, CO (the city most famous for it’s close proximity to some of the mountains and it’s relationship with a certain plant.)

-I’m a second year international studies major, and a first year journalism major, and I am absolutely ENTHRALLED with both. (I know, I know… sounds like the over pretentious girl you knew in second grade, but I don’t mean it that way, it’s just good to do things that fufill your soul!) There’s so much I wanna do and see, and right now I just wanna open as many doors within those areas as far as a career goes.

-I want to travel the world! I want to try crazy food and meet people who are totally different from me and I don’t know, maybe casually go sky diving in New Zealand or something..

-I like to mediate to stay grounded and keep sane..it’s hard to shut off my mind but I think it’s a really powerful tool for self care and healing.

-Some of my favorite bands are Say Anything, The Rocket Summer, Jared and the Mill, CHVRCHES, Purity Ring..and I totally have a soft spot for Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and this weird obsession with John Legend (thatttt man thoughhhhhhh <3333333)

Blah blah blah..that’s all I got. :] stay tuned if I didn’t bore you!

ALSOO I found this video of a cat dressed up like Bane from the batman series.. and the world needs to know about it ;]

In the wake of a massive typhoon that hit part of the Philippines about four days ago, supplies and relief efforts are racing to the islands. However some argue that relief efforts are not coming fast enough.

CNN reports that aid attempts are facing many obstacles, such as continued rain and other “transportation problems.” The CNN report also offers some insight into the current situation within the disaster area, as one iReporter told Cnn she “(feared) anarchy.”

The  office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees also explained that the situation has forced many women and children into positions of danger as they are begging for food or other help.

(The CNN web story explains that this woman gave birth inside one of the make-shift medical centers in the area).

The CNN story also reports that there are at least 29 countries that have offered financial support, stacking up to the amounts below as shown on the web story:

PHILIPPINES AID (IN U.S. $)

U.N.: 25 million

U.S.: 20 million

UK: 16.1 million

UAE: 10 million

Australia: 9.5 million

Canada: 4.8 million

European Union: 4 million

Norway: 3.4 million

Denmark: 3.1 million

New Zealand: 1.75 million

Ireland: 1.4 million

Vatican: 150,000

China: 100,000

Philippine ambassador to the Us also tells CNN that while they experience “20 to 24 [typhoons] a year” this is one of the worst ones he can remember.

The catastrophe may be just that, as the Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon also explained that there are “bodies in the water, bodies on the bridges, bodies on the side of the road.”

While the relief effort continues, the UN Climate Conference has already started addressing the threat of an event such as Haiyan happening again.

its never to early to plan for new years..

The pursuit to end 2013 is officially in motion.

Stores in the mall are playing Christmas music again, Starbucks has started putting their lattes in the infamous red holiday cups, and one of my favorite events of the year is in the works.

DECADENCE2K12-196

DECADENCE is a massive News Years Event thrown by local promoters/ Denver dance scene monsters Global Dance (Traid Dragons) LiveNation and AEG Live.

The event is fairly new, considering that the first one went down just a couple years ago in 2011. However this event has gained massive crowds that are crazier, louder, and more ready to ring in the New Year in style than the previous year…it literally just keeps getting better.

I know this because I love attending Triad’s other events during the year, such as Caffeine, Hallofreakinween, and of course the massive know as Global Dance Festival during the summer. So when I was still just a bitty in high school, and I heard they were starting this event, I went nuts. I have gone every year since then, and it is literally one of the best times I have ever had in my entire life.

The glitz of Denver is obviously captivating during the holidays.  But its the people that are so open and ready to just have fun and be free that make this event just that much better. I know what you’re thinking, “well duh, that’s cause everyone’s drunk and/or probably rolling their faces off. ” That’s def a part of it, I wont deny it. But there’s also a connected spirit in the EDM scene that’s so alive and well in Denver, seeping through the pores of every sweaty person on that floor. And I expect nothing less for my New Years.

This year brings an amazing lineup to the Denver Convention Center on TWO nights. One of the biggest names in the world of dance music TIESTO. Fan favorite BASSNECTAR. Group acts like DADA LIFE, and a local favorite PRETTY LIGHTS.

Tickets are killer, in the bad kind of way. Literally planning on being broke for a solid couple of weeks to pay for this experience. But I mean it. This is one of the best things Denver has to offer on New Years if your a 20 year old like me who is still shut out of the world of bars*… Give this event a chance. I promise it just might be the best night of your life. :]

Whats your favorite thing to do on New Years? Have you ever been to Decadence before, or have you been to any other Global Dance/Triad events?

Comment below and lets all just get stoked for break even though we haven’t even made it to Thanksgiving yet…

Optimism, yeah? :] good.

*just to be clear they do have full bars for all you real people that are legal, too!
